More than 10 trillion yen in three months: the scale of Meta’s revenue

First, let’s look at the numbers. Meta’s revenue for July–September was $64.601 billion, up 26% from the same period last year. In yen, that amounts to just over 10.22 trillion yen in only three months.

It is striking that a company of this size is maintaining growth in the 20%-plus range year over year. Generally, the larger a business becomes, the harder it is to keep growing at the same rate.

We won’t try to determine here how much of this revenue growth came from AI. What is clear are two things: revenue rose substantially, and at the same time, there is no sign that the company intends to ease up on AI-related investment.

Even with profits up, Meta isn’t tightening its purse strings

The latest results were reported to show a sharp increase in bottom-line profit. Even so, Meta is expected to continue massive capital investment in areas including AI.

Capital investment is spending on the foundations that keep a business running, such as data centers and computers. AI is not a field where building smart software is the end of the story. It needs equipment capable of handling huge amounts of computation, so massive sums are constantly flowing behind the scenes to support these services.

Is Meta continuing to invest because revenue growth has given it more room to do so, or does it need to keep earning in order to sustain its investment? Views may differ, but either way, earnings and investment are clearly turning like two wheels of the same vehicle.

AI consumes money as well as generating expectations

When people hear “AI,” they may think of visible features such as convenient chatbots and image generation. But the foundation supporting them is the capital investment that large companies make every quarter. These results show that even a company with revenue on the scale of 10 trillion yen is continuing to invest.

For users, it is worth recognizing that the availability of AI services for free or at low prices is backed by this kind of massive spending. The figures in the earnings report are one indicator of AI’s future, and are worth continuing to follow.
