Google announced updates to its AI search features, AI Mode and AI Overviews, to make it easier for users to move from AI-generated answers to websites, news, and creators’ content. The changes include more frequent placement of links higher up in answers, along with revisions to how official pages and related links are displayed. Some of the measures are still being tested.

Designing search so users don’t just read an answer and stop

Search that uses AI to answer questions is certainly convenient. But that convenience has a downside: users may be satisfied after reading an answer and never visit the sites where the information came from. That is precisely what website owners and media outlets are concerned about.

This update can be seen as an effort to bridge that gap. Rather than simply improving AI answers, it aims to guide users onward to information on the web. The underlying design philosophy appears to be about making “AI answering questions” and “visiting the source” work together.

The changes include both features that are already rolling out and measures still being tested. The following sections distinguish between them.

Placing links near the top of answers

Inline links embedded in AI answers have reportedly already increased significantly. Now, Google is making links appear higher up in answers more often. This means users can see sources early, without having to read all the way through a long response.

Another change worth noting is the guidance to official pages. For some types of information, such as government procedures, there may be only one or two official sources. In those cases, Google is testing a dedicated section near the top of the answer that highlights official pages and explains why each link may be useful. This expands on an existing feature that highlights links for users looking to visit specific sites.

With procedures of this kind, there is a real risk of misunderstanding them after reading summaries on unofficial sites. If a link to the official source appears near the top of an answer, users can avoid an unnecessary detour. It may prove to be a modest but effective change that influences the quality of the search experience.

Paths to news and related articles

The Top Stories carousel, which displays recent articles in AI search features, has begun expanding to more countries and languages. The range of queries it covers is also growing.

The carousel also highlights users’ selected “preferred sources.” The number of people using this feature has reportedly grown more than sevenfold since the start of the year. This suggests that choosing preferred media outlets is gradually catching on.

Google is also changing the related-article links shown at the end of some AI answers. They are expected to feature thumbnail images and a design that makes them easier to click. As we see every day in news apps and on social media, links with images are more likely to catch the eye than text-only links.

From a creator’s name to their world

Google has begun testing a feature in AI Mode video results that lets users click a creator’s or publisher’s name to go to their Search profile. The profile offers a broader look at that person’s work.

The idea is to provide a way for users to become interested in the creator, rather than simply watching a referenced video and moving on. This can be seen as an effort to foster relationships with creators, not just engagement with individual pieces of content. It could offer video creators a new way to connect with audiences.

The next focus: the quality and volume of visits

This update aims to make it easier for users to move from AI answers to content on the web. The changes span several areas, including link placement, how official pages are presented, paths to news, and links to creators.

It remains to be seen how visits to websites from AI search will change in practice. The fact that official-page guidance and creator-profile links are still in the testing phase also suggests that Google is continuing to explore how best to display them. Website owners may want to monitor where and how their pages appear in answers.
